Yay, Laura, yay! "But in so many ways, fashion is very old fashioned. And for most people who travel around to runway shows for months on end, it’s a borrowed life. The business class plane ticket you couldn’t typically afford, the luxury hotel room, the gifted flowers, the gifted handbag. It’s all beyond lovely, but once you think it’s yours, you’re in trouble." Yes, so much. I remember not being able to afford my work credit card bills—even remotely—because the Condé travel agents would put us the Hermitage and Four Seasons when we traveled. Meanwhile, I was living with four roommates above a Burger King and couldn't afford to leave my apartment during the weekends because I might then spend $20. The time span between filing expenses and getting reimbursed was rough—and there was such a disconnect between how they expected us to show up in the world and what I could afford, which was...nothing. Because they paid us nothing.
The clothes I had in my wardrobe didn't match the pay cheques I was getting! Adorable illusions wafting around the city! I concur with the one foot in, one foot out.. much the healthiest way to be. Congrats Laura, looking forward to reading about your " broader world". x
Happy to read your premiere issue! I have never worked in fashion or in any adjacent world...which, when I look back may have been a missed opportunity to work in the realm of one of my main interests! But now, since I am in the group of the retired elder community, I satisfy my still active enthusiasm by following people on Instagram and reading newsletters! Looking forward to future writings!
It's interesting how so many of us who couldn't wait to get away from a place in our youth are drawn back decades later. Maybe it's because the world's smaller, we're older, that we become different people (more accomplished, confident), or we have the means to jump from hemisphere to hemisphere. Or all of the above? Looking forward to the weekly missive.
Everything I say is funny, clever, and helpful
Love it can’t wait to come on the journey with you!
You'll go far with this attitude
